Croatia has been on my list of places to go for a while now and after a very busy summer I couldn’t wait for some time off, to relax, explore and get some much needed sunshine! My friend and I booked off a week and after many recommendations chose to stay on the island of Hvar.
Whilst sticking to the FODMAP diet at home is becoming easier and easier for me, I must admit I was a little bit apprehensive about going abroad for the first time since following this diet. So I tried to prepare as much as I could and packed plenty low FODMAP options with me(just incase!). Needless to say I wasn’t disappointed and Hvar provided me with lots of low FODMAP options, and generally my health was pretty good.
I noticed there was lots of grilled polenta on the menus – which is a bonus for us fodmappers! I also tried to stick to meat and vegetables or potato’s as a safe option – I wasn’t complaining about this. I had some great steaks when I was away and it was so cheap!
Here’s a few of the low FODMAP meals I tried out on holiday:
My top tips for keeping your symptoms at bay whilst you’re on holiday:
Be prepared – pack some low FODMAP options for the flight and for your travels, you never know when you might need then and it might stop you from eating something you’ll later regret.
Don’t be afraid to ask – lots of restaurants cater for dietary needs now and don’t be afraid to ask if they can cater to your needs.
Relax – holidays are supposed to be a relaxing and enjoyable time, when I’m stress free my symptoms improve.
Stick to regular eating patterns – even if it means carrying snacks about, it’s better for the tum!
I would highly recommend Hvar as a place to relax and unwind for other fellow fodmappers 🙂
