FODY Foods – A FODMAP Friendly Food Co.

FODY Foods are now supplying their food products in the UK. Woo hoo! I was lucky enough to receive a box full of FODY foods goodies. In this blog post I’m going to let you know how I got on with them.

First of all I would like to point out that the low FODMAP diet is a diet to be followed with the support of a registered dietitian. It is not a long term diet and you are only supposed to follow it strictly, for a short period. After this you reintroduce foods, to assess your tolerances. It is not a fad diet and it is not for everyone. Re-introductions are very important and YES, I know exactly how difficult they can be – I’m still challenging foods.

I love cooking and I pretty much make every meal from scratch and I’m used to doing this, especially when following a FODMAP diet. However, every once it a while it would be nice to be able to grab something on the go. This is where FODY foods have come to my rescue.  In my opinion, they have created a range that covers the most difficult products to purchase (depending on your FODMAP tolerances) for anyone following this diet.

I received the Ketchup, Marinara Sauce, Salsa, BBQ Sauce, Trail Mixes, Chicken Soup Base, Lemon & Herb Seasoning and Taco Seasoning to try out. I was most excited about receiving the mexican goodies and BBQ Sauce, however I soon learned that there was much more to be excited about!

Salsa – Ok, so I’m putting my favourite product at the top of the list. I have never been able to find a FODMAP friendly salsa and I absolutely love salsa. I can tolerate a small amount of garlic but onions are a big no no for me so I was super excited about this product. After only sharing this jar once, I’ve eaten the rest myself. It really is delicious and is so similar to a standard salsa product. If you’re going to buy from FODY Foods, it HAS to be this product.

Ketchup – This one also met the taste test and I really didn’t notice the difference between this and any other ketchup but I would say that it is worth noting that according to the Monash University FODMAP app, once sachet of a regular tomato sauce is also low FODMAP. But I guess it depends on your tolerances and how much ketchup you use!

Marinara Sauce – I often try to create a quick FODMAP friendly pasta sauce as a meal during the working week. This sauce is simple, tasty and you can just throw it in the pot. You can also add whichever veg or meat you would like to. I’d recommend this.

BBQ Sauce – This is another product that I really love and miss and again have tried to create my own with not much luck, so I was delighted to receive this. It is quite a strong tangy BBQ sauce but it makes a lovely addition to a meal now and again. Unfortunately it’s not been hot or dry enough in Scotland to actually try it out on the BBQ!

Trail Mixes – There are two trail mixes in the FODY foods range. The mockingbird contains nuts, banana chips, dark chocolate, and puffed quinoa and the woodpecker mix contains pumpkin and sunflower seeds, coconut chips, cranberries, pecans, and hazelnuts. I’ve found these small bags perfect for packing into my handbag while on the go. They’re also useful for taking to work as a snack too. I think my favourite has to be the mockingbird mix.

Chicken Soup Base – I would describe this as a powdered stock, and have found this fab to add flavour to soups, sauces and I’ve even tried it risottos that I’ve made. It comes in quite a big container so I think this is going to last me quite a while.

Lemon & Herb Seasoning – I have to admit this is a type of seasoning I’ve never actually tried before and it was delicious, I added it to chicken and veg with rice and it tasted lovely.

Taco Seasoning – Yup, Mexican is one of my favourite foods and I often try and make up my own Mexican seasoning but again, this is great for convenience and tastes delicious too. Yes, this was served up with the salsa. Yum yum.

I’m very excited to have a FODMAP friendly food company selling in the UK as it’s great for convenience and to have tasty food that I feel I’ve been missing out on. Again, I’m going to stress the importance of reintroducing but the great thing about a lot of these products are that as they are mostly bases you can add in the foods that you can tolerate. On initally looking at the FODY Shop I thought the products seemed a little bit on the expensive side but the jars and sauces are larger than the standard UK size.

You can shop the products here. Let me know if you try them out and how you get on with them!
