Madeleine Shaw ‘Get the Glow’ book tour – Edinburgh
I am still so happy about the fact I met Madeleine Shaw on Wednesday night! On top of this, I got to enjoy her food, get my book signed and receive some great advice from her. The Edinburgh Supper Club was the final leg of Madeleine’s Nationwide book tour, held at Harvey Nichols and it provided me with the perfect opportunity to enjoy being a healthy food geek.
Madeleine’s story is close to home in that she also suffers from IBS. After moving to Sydney and working in an organic café in Sydney, she was taught to properly source and prepare food. Madeleine pulled herself out of a destructive relationship with food and now eats a wholesome diet, vastly improving her overall health and digestive problems. She then studied at the Institute of Integritive Nutrition which lead her to developed her blog, sharing lots of stunning recipes and great lifestyle tips.
So, my lovely friend Jo informed me that Madeleine Shaw was coming to Edinburgh for her book tour (thanks for that!) and I was straight on the phoning booking my place! Myself and my friend Laura got some tickets and couldn’t wait to head along, armed with our books.
The Supper Club was held in Harvey Nichols fourth floor restaurant, which in itself was a beautiful setting for such an event. The restaurant has stunning views over the city and luckily the sun was shining on Wednesday night. When we arrived we were greeted with a lovely passion fruit welcome drink, which was so refreshing. We were then taken to our table, which, lucky for us we got the table right at the front!
Madeleine came out and greeted everyone and spoke about her reasons for living the lifestyle she does now. She stated that she originally thought a diet based on diet coke and rice cakes was the right way to eat, it was only once she she swapped this for wholesome foods such as nourishing fats, meat and vegetables that she really started to notice a difference in her health. She then went on to discuss the menu for the evening, the sharing dishes consisted of Green Goddess Bowl, Mexican BBQ grilled corn and quinoa with chilli salsa, Thai beef salad salt and pepper cashews, Spicy salmon with cucumber and yoghurt. This was followed with a desert of raw cherry chocolate fudge served with dairy free coconut ice cream. Whilst not everything was completely low FODMAP, it was very healthy and I think it’s really important to relax and enjoy yourself now and again. So, we couldn’t wait to try them out…
The sharing plates came out together for Laura and I to share between one another and serve up ourselves. This was perfect for me as I love to try a little bit or everything and I can never manage huge portions so I could pick what I wanted.
The food was just so yummy! It was so colourful, well presented, tasty and best of all healthy. My favourite was the Thai beef salad and Spicy salmon, I will most definitely be giving these a go in the near future. We couldn’t manage both the plates of food as there was so much of it and obviously we were saving some space for the desert.
This desert was hands down, one of THE best deserts I’ve ever had. I couldn’t get enough of it. I’m definitely going to be trying out the raw chocolate cherry fudge, I might even try this weekend. The dairy free coconut ice cream recipe isn’t in her book, but we did ask Madeleine if she could post the recipe so fingers crossed.
After the meal, Madeleine signed our books. We got the chance to ask her lots of questions that we wanted to ask and she was so lovely. We got chatting about IBS and I discussed that it was frustrating that even doing everything right I still suffer quite badly from it. She went on to tell me that everyone has their ‘thing’, and that everyone is suffering from something and not to let it get you down and how important it is to listen to your body. We also discussed the use of digestive enzymes and probiotics – which reminded me to start taking them again!
It was such a fun evening, with great company and awesome food. I hope Madeleine comes back to Edinburgh soon!
